Excavation Company Massachusetts
Excavation Company Massachusetts columns are thin round-walled structural steel units with vertical orientation to offer support to timbers or beams stretching over long spans. Their steel shell is usually filled with concrete carrying compression load thus helping to prevent the shell local from buckling. Lally columns come with the advantage of the ability to cut easily to desired lengths depending on the needs at the construction site with the use of simple tools such as pipe cutters or even a reciprocating saw. This is an advantage over conventional structural columns. They are not that durable or strong when compared to their conventional counterparts.
These columns were named after Excavation Company Massachusetts a U.S inventor who had a construction company from where the production of the columns began. This was late in the 19th century. He had his residence at Massachusetts, Waltham and Boston between 1898 and 1907. He attained a total of four U.S patents on the composite columns all assigned to the column company. He became the largest contractor building plenty of schools, private homes, factories and churches as well as banks and other major works.
Apart from Lally columns, he also invented chimney hoods, fireplace dampers, plastering machines, adjustable trowels and double-headed nails among others. He was an imaginative and innovative mechanic too and during his experiments the columns came into existence. He made all his inventions as a way of making improvements to the quality of the work he was doing.
In earlier times, the Lally columns were made using standard pipe structural steel with a thickness standing at less than ¼. Modern columns on the other hand have shells that are approximately 0.06?. This means, therefore that the modern columns are lower in strength compared to the earlier ones; hence they tend to be subject to corrosion damage in environments that are moist. The modern columns are still however considered to be stronger and durable compared to those made from wood posts.
The Lally Column Strengths
Lally columns are very popular today and are used widely. This is probably because of the many advantages they have despite the little shortcomings and downfalls. The strengths they have include the following.
Structural stability that makes construction projects more valuable. They can be used in different places during construction to offer the needed stability of the structure; hence only quality construction is achieved at the end of the day.
They are made using materials which are readily available and therefore easy to access. The use of concrete and steel which are materials easily accessible makes the columns quite cost effective. This is because even the materials are low in cost compared to other materials that would be needed for the same.
